My experience at S.H.O.O.T. MMA was pretty different from other disciplines I've tried with Nomad. The session I did focused mainly on self-defence rather than MMA as a competitive sport. From the very first minute the training was hands-on and to the point: we started working on defensive movements, techniques and different kinds of locks, without spending much time on warm-up or complementary drills. In my case, I already had some athletic background, so I was able to follow the session fairly easily. Even so, I found their approach to teaching interesting, and above all the practical focus on the techniques themselves. One of the things that sets S.H.O.O.T. apart is their methodology. As they explained to me, the first 15 classes are one-on-one, working through the different techniques progressively before putting them into practice later on in a more group-based setting. The instructor was friendly and approachable throughout the whole session and, beyond the training itself, he walked me through how the programme works and the philosophy behind it. The venue where I trained was a private room, clean and well set up, with a tatami and all the gear you need. Since it was a one-on-one session, I couldn't get a first-hand feel for what the community dynamic is like in a group class. As for the price, this is a significant investment: the programme runs roughly €1,500–1,600 and includes the initial one-on-one sessions, a year of training and a certification. That's why I think it's important to be clear about what you're actually buying: it's less about simply paying to go and train, and more of a structured self-defence training programme. Who do I think it's a good fit for? Mainly for someone who wants to learn self-defence through a structured methodology, with individual attention and a clearly defined progression. If you're just looking for a place to train MMA in the conventional sense, you'll probably find cheaper options out there. As always at Nomad, this isn't about calling it good or bad. The question is: is this place for you?
